Introduction to Structural Design (MIT 4.462/4.440/1.056, spring 2020)
The course introduces the design and behavior of efficient structural systems and structural materials. It emphasizes the development of structural forms and material systems with low environmental footprints through the application of the principles of structural design. Presents design methods, tools, and recent innovations in structural design in (mass) timber, masonry, concrete, steel, and other alternative materials such as rammed earth, whole timber, or bamboo. The students apply the learning in two design/build/load-test laboratory exercises and two final design projects including floor systems, a pedestrian bridge, and a long-spanning roof. The course includes the environmental assessment of structural systems and materials.
